We didn’t realize we could bring snacks to our candle-making class, so we were pretty hungry afterwards. DeColores seemed like a great option (we love Mexican food and it was on the way home!). So we drove north on Halsted to DeColores.
The restaurant is small and artsy, with a nice bar area when you walk in, as well as intimate booths with high backs and tables for larger groups. We were seated right away, and enjoyed fresh, warm tortilla chips and delicious salsa. Of course we had to order some pico de gallo, too, with flavorful, unexpected additions like strawberries and cucumber. It tasted so fresh like summertime. The salsa paired well with the drinks on the menu, like Ginger Lemon and Strawberry Basil.
For dinner, I ordered the steak tacos (mine with cilantro, onion, and lime on corn tortillas), of which I could only eat two I was so full, and Nate had the chicken flautas. Both dishes came with rice and beans, and Nate’s had a greens salad as well. The food was delicious–I really wanted to finish that last taco but just couldn’t (made a nice snack for Nate, though…win win!).
I would definitely come back to this little gem–the food was tasty and the staff was friendly and attentive. I’m always looking for new Mexican spots–let me know if you have any recommendations!
