mom’s night out: girl & the goat

Hope is one of my best friends at work. We work really closely together, we talk just about every day, and she makes me laugh harder than many people can. The only problem? She lives 2,120 miles away in Portland, Oregon, and I only get to see her a few times a year. 

She was in town this week for work, and it was the best to be able to say “good morning” and razz her in person. She also kept spoiling me with Mindy’s Hot Chocolate pastries from the Revival Food Hall. Diet starts after the Super Bowl?

On Thursday we planned to go to dinner, with Au Cheval in mind. Upon arrival (around 5:20 pm), frozen from the frigid temperature, the wait was an hour to an hour and twenty minutes (the cheeseburger IS one of a kind, I can vouch for it). But we decided to hustle across Randolph to Girl & the Goat. Immediate seating at the bar was perfect; Hope was excited because she’d been wanting to dine here!

It was my third time at Girl & the Goat (post-wedding and pre-baby, I loved to live it up), and it was exactly how I remembered it. The beautiful decor with exotic details and textures, the hustle of a good wait staff, the delicious smells of high-quality and innovative dishes, the beautiful craft cocktails waiting to be sipped…should I keep going?

I asked for a dairy-free menu (Stephanie Izard is very accommodating to those of us with food allergies and intolerances at all of her restaurants, much appreciated), to balance out my meal and make sure I didn’t overdo it. It’s hard for me to show restraint to gouda bread with smoked lard butter and romesco. So I didn’t.

I also had the Boondock Saints cocktail (a tasty chilled Hot Toddy), a glass of still rosé, braised beef tongue, grilled cuddlefish, the famous sautéed green beans, and the most decadent and fantastic crumpets I’ve ever tasted in my life (served with goat liver mousse, rosemary pickles, grapefruit preserves, and persimmon marmalade, of course). 

This meal was out…of…this…world. It is so hard for me to justify a meal like this now, but I can’t tell you the last time I had a foodie dinner. It felt nice to enjoy a well-cooked (understatement) meal with Hope, and have time outside of work to catch up and be silly. Those meals and moments are priceless. Xo

Lagunitas Tap Room

It’s been a while since my last visit to a local brewery, so I was pretty excited to receive an invite to the Lagunitas Tap Room for our friend Jeff’s birthday. Children allowed?!? Even better.

So we packed up the diaper bag for some celebrating and had the best time. We got to the Tap Room around 3:30 pm on a Saturday, and the parking lot was pretty full. We entered the warehouse, where we were greeted at the door, and followed on to a psychedelic hallway of blue lights, neon paint, and loud music. I was a little nervous what I’d find at the end of the hall, but quite amused along the way!

We got to the end of the hallway where there was a super long line. Thinking it was for the brewery tour, we headed to the front, let them know where we were going and for a birthday, and headed up the stairs to the Tap Room. (I didn’t realize this WAS the line for the Tap Room. I was very grateful for these men, not making us wait with our little one!)

And after climbing the metal steps, it was clear why there was a line: the place was packed, and everyone was having a good time (=not leaving soon). There were a few rooms with lots of seating for lounging and eating, live entertainment in the form of a band and a magician, and picnic tables overlooking the brewery. Lucky for us, our friends scored a great picnic table with plenty of room to sit and stand around.

First matter of business: order beer! I opted for a sampler, which I think is the best way to try a bunch of options at a super affordable price. I chose:

  • Daytime – IPA
  • Pils – Czech Style Pilsner
  • Copper Fusion 17 – Red Ale
  • Aunt Sally – Sweet Tart Sour Mash Ale

I liked all of them, but Aunt Sally was the kind of beer that a few sips is plenty. Although I appreciate how unique it is. I’ve never had a mash before. But Nate stole my Aunt Sally. Haha.

And in my effort to eat better, I ordered the chili (instead of a burger or pretzel or nachos, which I was drooling for!). Now, I’m a whimp, but consider this your warning: it’s spicy. Everyone at our table heard me say it about 15 times (sorry!), but it’s the kind of spicy that makes you keep eating and eating. I just needed something to cool me down. Enter: Glazed and Infused’s Jumbo Doughnut.

I love donuts. Like, I really love donuts. And this donut is one of the most glorious I’ve ever seen. The perfect layer of icing paired with tons of sprinkles. And one would wonder if it would taste any good. I’m here to tell you–it’s amazing. So amazing that I ordered one for my sister-in-law’s birthday the following weekend.

The Curragh

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you!

While I’m neither Irish or a Guinness drinker (especially now!), I had to tag along as my friends met up for lunch at The Curragh in our old stomping grounds of Edison Park.

We met up on a Sunday afternoon and enjoyed some traditional Irish fare (think corned beef and fish and chips), as well as tasty bar food staples like cheeseburgers and spinach artichoke dip. Their fries are out of this world!

It was quite crowded, which made for a lively atmosphere, perfect for our big group. The Curragh is a great place to bring anyone, from babies to grandparents. There’s a little something for everyone!

I have to mention that we had a great table in the back corner, too, right next to the fire place. Bonus points for having hooks to hang coats and jackets (yes, I am a dork and enjoy the little conveniences in life!).
